Utah at SMU - Quick Hits

• This will be the fourth matchup all-time between the Utes and Mustangs with Utah holding a 3-0 advantage in the series.

• Utah went 3-0 this past week while hosting its Thanksgiving Tournament. The Utes were one of two Pac-12 schools to finish the week with a 3-0 record and are off to their best start to a season since 2008-09. That year’s team won 24 games.

• The Utes are coming off three-consecutive double-digit wins, 66-54 over Wright State, 67-51 victory against Central Michigan and 57-46 versus  Idaho State. This is the first time this has occurred in the Huntsman Center since 2006-07 with wins over Rice, Weber State and Washington State.

• SMU enters this game after going 3-1 last week with wins over Malone, Rider and Missouri State. The Mustangs are led by Kansas State transfer Nick Russell who is averaging 16.0 points per game and 3.9 assists. They are coached by Hall of Famer Larry Brown.

• The Utes currently have the top scoring defense of any team in the Pac-12, limiting opponents to 54.4 points per game on 33 percent field goal shooting and 28 percent three-point shooting.

• These statistics, along with a league-best 49.4 field goal percentage, have helped them attain the highest scoring margin in the league at +18.6.

Utah Notes Brief

DuBois Getting it Done for Utes

Jarred DuBois racked up a career-high 20 points on 5-of-7 from the field and 8-of-9 at the free throw line as he led Utah to a 67-51 victory over Central Michigan.

He was also perfect from long range, making both of his 3-point attempts. DuBois also pulled down five rebounds and dished out five assists, while not committing a single turnover.

Against Wright State, he scored 12 points while setting career-highs for assists (7) and rebounds (6). After this past weekend, he ranks fifth in the Pac-12 with an average of 4.0 assists per contest and also assist-to-turnover ratio (3.2)

Bachynski’s Massive Night Leads Utes Against Idaho State

Dallin Bachynski racked up 22 points and 16 rebounds against Idaho State for his second double-double in his first three games as a Ute. He also had one assist, one block and one steal while playing 32 minutes.

Bachynski became the first Utah player this year to score 20 or more points and is the first Ute to grab 15 or more rebounds in a game since Luke Nevill had 15 against San Diego State in the MWC Tournament championship game on Mar. 14, 2009. Bachynski’s 20-and-15 double-double is Utah’s first since Nevill had 23 points and 15 boards against Wyoming in the semifinals of the same tournament.

Bachynski has led the squad or tied for the team-high rebound honors in three of the first five games. He is currently averaging 9.0 rebounds per game, which ranks fifth in the Pac-12 Conference. He is also among the top 10 in the league in blocks at 1.4 per game.

Offensively, he leads the Utes with 13.2 points per game and is ranked among the top 15 scorers in the Pac-12. The sophomore is also eighth in field goal percentage at .585.

Loveridge Bounding up PAC-12 Leaderboard

Jordan Loveridge is among the top 10 in the Pac-12 in rebounding at an average of 8.2 per contest. He also ranks fourth with an average of 3.0 offensive rebounds per game

The freshman poured in a career-best 22 points to go along with nine rebounds in the Utes’ win over Wright State on Saturday. He ranks third on the team in scoring with 11.8 per contest.

Loveridge collected a career-high 12 rebounds against Idaho State, including four on the offensive glass. He also tied his career high with four assists while coming just three points shy of his second double-double.

It was the second time this season that Loveridge and Bachynski both pulled down double-digit rebounds in the same game.

Double-Digit Dean

Glen Dean has scored double digits in four of Utah’s five games this season, including 13 on Friday against Central Michigan. Dean is averaging 11.4 points per game, fourth on the team.

Dean leads the league with 2.4 3-pointers made per game, while ranking sixth in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage at 48.0% (12-of-25).

He is also currently fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio at 4.0 while ranking sixth in the Pac-12 in minutes played (170, leads Utah).

Washburn Looking to Become 35th Ute to Join 1,000-Point Club

Senior center Jason Washburn has scored 715 points in his 94 career games. With at least 26 games remaining, including the regular season and Pac-12 Tournament, Washburn must average 11.0 points per game for the remainder of the season to become the 35th Ute to hit the 1,000-point plateau. He is currently averaging 7.0 points per game after scoring at a career-best clip of 11.4 points per contest last year.

Freshman Impact

Through the first five games, Utah’s freshman class has accounted for 47.9% of the team’s scoring with 175 of the team’s 365 points. Leading the freshmen are Loveridge (11.8 points per game) and Dean (11.4), ranking third and fourth on the squad, respectively. Justin Seymour is averaging 6.0 points per game and classmate Dakarai Tucker is averaging 4.8 points per game as well.

Utah’s freshmen are crashing the boards as well, combining to collect 63 of Utah’s 171 total rebounds (37%). Loveridge is the top rebounding freshman with 8.0 boards per game, ranked 11th in the Pac-12, while Seymour is grabbing 3.8 per contest.

Bigs on the Boards

Head coach Larry Krystkowiak would like Utah’s big men to maintain a pace of approximately one rebound every four minutes. This space will be devoted to tracking that stat throughout the season. Bachynski is currently averaging one rebound every 2.6 minutes while Loveridge is at 3.4. Junior forward Renan Lenz (4.8) and Washburn (5.1) are just off the pace.

Utah Hits 100-Point Mark for the First Time Since 1995

In the 104-47 victory against Willamette, the Utes hit the 100-point plateau for the first time since racking up 108 points in a victory over Cal State Fullerton on Dec. 27, 1995.

Utes on TV

Utah is 4-1 this season in televised contests. The Utes will play a minimum of 24 more live televised games this year, including every conference contest and each game played in the Pac-12 Tournament.

The Runnin’ Utes will appear on the Pac-12 Network a total of 24 times in the regular season. Utah will also play on ESPNU twice and make one appearance on FSN.
