The Greatest Game Ever Played in Einar Nielson Fieldhouse

Dec. 5, 2007

On Dec. 21, 1959, two of the greatest college basketball players in the country faced off in a matchup of two of the best hardwood teams in the country. No. 2 Ohio State visited No. 6 Utah at Einar Nielson Fieldhouse.

The game brought the Buckeyes' Jerry Lucas face-to-face with Utah's Billy "The Hill" McGill. The two players and their teams played each other to a standoff for the full 40 minutes. McGill, with his soaring hook shot, scored 31 points. Lucas scored 32. Both grabbed 17 rebounds.

But Billy got a little help from his friends. Gary Chestang scored 22 points for Utah. Alan Holmes -- faking, driving and passing - added 21 for the home team. Aggressive defense was played by Rich Ruffel, Joe Morton and Jim Rhead also helped the Ute cause.

In the end, Utah took a 97-92 win over Ohio State.
