Game 5

Utah 45, Kansas 42

Salt Lake City - Sept. 28
Rice Stadium - Att. 32,519

SALT LAKE CITY - In a nationally televised (ESPN2) shoot-out, the Utes shocked No. 20 Kansas, 45-42, before a sell-out crowd in Rice Stadium. Kansas opened the slugfest with an 80-yard drive on its first possession to take a 7-0 lead. But the Utes bounced back, using a pair of touchdowns by sophomore running back Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala and a 65-yard pass play from Mike Fouts to Kevin Dyson to take a 21-7 lead. Kansas got the last word before the half, however, narrowing the gap to 21-14.

In a wild second half, the lead changed hands four times, with two ties. Fouts proved the difference in the end. He was brilliant--throwing for a career-high 476 yards and four touchdowns in a game that saw the Utes roll up 579 yards. Also posting career games for the Utes were receivers Rocky Henry (129 yards, 4 TDs) and Kevin Dyson (172 yards, 1 TD). Fuamatu-Ma'afala quietly racked up 103 rushing yards to go with his two scores.

The visitors appeared in control after they faked a field goal and then completed a 20-yard touchdown pass with 4:09 left to take a 42-38 lead. But the injury-battered Ute defense held after Fouts was intercepted and gave him a chance at redemption. Fouts responded by leading Utah on a 6-play, 82-yard scoring drive, culminating with a 4-yard Fouts-to-Henry pass. Utah then stopped Kansas on four straight downs to preserve the victory--Utah's first of the season over a ranked team and its fourth straight.
