Game 8

Utah 45, Tulsa 19

Salt Lake City - Oct. 19, 1996
Rice Stadium - Att. 29,047

SALT LAKE CITY - After the grounds crew cleared nine inches of snow off the Rice Stadium field, Utah rolled up 601 yards of total offense and buried Tulsa, 45-19. Even the loss of star running back Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala, who underwent knee surgery the day before, couldn't deter the Utes from manhandling the Golden Hurricane.

Juan Johnson rushed for a career-high 197 yards and three touchdowns (he also caught a touchdown pass). Kevin Dyson turned four catches into a career-high 176 yards and two touchdowns. And freshman Omar Bacon--forced out of his redshirt year with the injury to Fuamatu-Ma'afala--ran for 82 yards. Quarterback Mike Fouts directed the potent Ute attack--throwing for 327 yards and three scores. After going three and out on their first drive, the Utes strung together five straight scoring drives going into the half. The first was a 52-yard field goal by Daniel Pulsipher, followed by four touchdowns.

Defensively, the Utes stymied a Tulsa offense that came into the game averaging 380 yards per game. The Golden Hurricane managed just 302 yards this day and coughed up two interceptions to the swarming Ute defense. Harold Lusk's fifth interception of the year was the 18th of his career--a new school record.
