Last season, his first as Utah's defensive line coach, Chad Kauha'aha'a (pronounced cow-ha-a-ha-a) produced two first-team all-Pac-12 players, a Morris Award winner and a bowl MVP.

Derrick Shelby and Star Lotulelei represented Utah on the all-conference first team and Lotulelei won the Morris Award, honoring him as the league's best defensive lineman. Lotulelei was also voted the Most Valuable Lineman of the Sun Bowl. Shelby was named the Walter Camp Defensive Player of the Week and Pac-12 Player of the Week in October for his game against Pitt.

Kauha'aha'a's position accounted for over 30 tackles for loss and half the team's total sacks (15.5) in 2011.

Two of his Ute linemen were picked up by NFL teams as free agents after their senior season: Tevita Finau (Arizona) and Shelby (Miami).

Before joining his alma mater's staff, the former Ute defensive end spent the 2009-10 seasons as Utah State's defensive line coach. He worked in the same capacity at Weber State from 2005-09, helping the Wildcats to a share of the 2008 Big Sky Conference title. Weber advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2008 Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.

At Weber State, Kauha'aha'a coached FSC first-team All-America defensive end Brady Fosmark, also a first-team all-Big Sky pick along with defensive tackle Shane Barkdull.

Kauha'aha'a got his coaching start at Baldwin High School in Maui, Hawaii. There, he posted a 25-5-2 record in three seasons, winning two Maui Interscholastic League championships. His teams ranked in the top five in the state all three seasons. Baldwin High's Kaluka Maiava went on to play for USC and is now with the Cleveland Browns.
