Former Utah All-American Morgan Scalley is now in his seventh year coaching the safeties and his fifth year as Utah's recruiting coordinator. Scalley, a second-team All-America safety for Utah's 2004 Fiesta Bowl team, is in his ninth year overall on the staff, having first apprenticed as an administrative assistant in 2006 and a graduate assistant working with the linebackers in 2007.
He has tutored three of the best safeties in school history since taking over the position six years ago. Robert Johnson was a first-team all-Mountain West Conference selection in 2009 and a fifth-round draft pick of the Tennessee Titans. Current Ute starters Brian Blechen and Eric Rowe were named Freshman All-Americans in 2010 and 2011, respectively.
Scalley has also achieved success as a recruiter. In 2010, online recruiting service Rivals.com tabbed him as its top non-BCS recruiter of the year and one of the Top 25 recruiters in the nation overall. In 2011, Rivals.com again recognized Scalley, this time as one of the top recruiters in the Pac-12 and a "recruiting coordinator on the rise."
Rivals.com ranked Utah's 2010 recruiting class as the best by a school from a non-automatic qualifying conference and 32nd overall. Rivals rated Utah's 2012 recruiting class as the country's 25th best while Scout.com gave the Utes a No. 32 ranking.
Scalley was the MWC co-Defensive Player of the Year, a unanimous first-team all-conference selection and a second-team A.P. and SI.com All-American as a senior in 2004. A four-year letterman (2001-04), he was a second-team all-MWC defensive back in 2003 and an honorable mention all-MWC punt returner in 2001 and 2002.
As a senior in 2004, he captained a Utah team that went 12-0, won the Fiesta Bowl as the first non-BCS team to play in a BCS bowl game and finished with a No. 4 national ranking.
Scalley was a two-time first-team Academic All-American (2003-04), the 2004 Anson Mount Scholar Athlete of the Year and the 2004 MWC Scholar Athlete of the Year. He was awarded two post-graduate scholarships, including one from the NCAA.
He was presented with the inaugural Pat Tillman award during the 2005 East-West Shrine Game, recognizing him for his character, intelligence, sportsmanship and service.
After graduating Magna Cum Laude from the U. with a 3.96 GPA, Scalley earned a master's degree in business.
