Utah Head Coach Kyle Whittingham

“To play the type of defense that we did was encouraging but that last series was on our offense. We couldn’t protect a 12-point lead in the fourth quarter and that was really disappointing.”

“Arizona State is a good football program and I give them a lot of credit, they made a lot of plays down the stretch and we did not. Special teams played well but all that matters is the end result and we didn’t get it done.”

On protection

“We didn’t protect. That’s the biggest issue with the offense. The offensive line needs to play better.”

On defense

“It was a great effort by our defense. They played their hearts out, but you’ve got to protect a 12 point lead so it was a team effort today.”

On the secondary

“I thought the secondary did a terrific job. The defensive effort, with the exception of not holding on to the lead, was great. But, you have to protect the lead.”

On play calling

“I don’t think we were too conservative. We called the game the same way and it wasn’t very different as far as run-pass ratio. If you can’t protect your passer then you have to try to run.

Defensive End Trevor Reilly

“We didn’t finish. That’s on our defense. We had a 12-point lead but we didn’t protect it. In the first three quarters we were shutting them down but we didn’t keep it going in the fourth quarter”

“That’s the second or third game we’ve let go in the fourth quarter. We need to remember our technique in the fourth quarter.

“To be one quarter away from beating another Top 25 team at home and be one win away from a bowl game and to lose like that was hard. It was ours to lose and we just lost.”

Quarterback Travis Wilson

“I thought we played well until the fourth quarter. We have to make sure that we keep on working on areas that we need to improve.”

“Bubba and Kelvin ran the ball really well and we made some great plays but we didn’t get it done in the fourth quarter.”

Defensive End Jason Whittingham

“I don’t think ASU did anything differently in the fourth quarter. Great teams finish and we didn’t. We need to close out games.”

“I think our defensive front did what they’ve done all year and they protected well for the first three quarters. But in the end we needed to a little more.”

Arizona State Head Coach Todd Graham

On the win

“I’m really proud of our guys. I want to start off first giving credit to Utah. Coach Whittingham does a tremendous job. Utah is a very physical, very tough team. Obviously, he’s a defensive-minded guy. I haven’t seen the film, but that’s the best that we’ve been defended. They did a tremendous job. We had a lot of negative yardage plays. They did a great job keeping us out of rhythm.”

On his team

“I’m very proud of our team. Our guys have bought in to how we’re doing things. Our players are actually coaching our team. Coach Norvell calls the offense, I call the defense, and our guys are coaching our team. I see defensive guys going down to the offense end saying, ‘Hey, just keep plugging. We can win this game. They’re not scoring.’ Then our offense goes down and scores.

On DL Will Sutton’s late interception

“Will Sutton, he was the player of the year last year and a consensus All-American, but since I’ve been here that’s the biggest play that I think he’s made. That was a tremendous play. We’ve got players that make great plays.

On winning on the road

“Coming in here, I can tell you, it is a difficult place to play. It’s very loud, they do a tremendous job. To come in here and to win the way we did is going to help our team tremendously. Our players, the character they showed, they did a great job today. I thought we played well on special teams—though their punter is like ‘wow!’ I’ve never seen anyone kick the ball the way he does. He’s really, really good. But I thought we won special teams. And I thought we played well defensively, especially down the stretch in the fourth quarter.”

On his defense

“You have to give [Utah] a lot of credit. I’ve watched a lot of film. Very few times does our team go out there on the field and the other team does things you haven’t seen before. That happened for the first time tonight. But our guys didn’t panic. They had some adjustments that caused us some problems early on. We just went back and said, ‘Guys whatever we ran in Camp, let’s just go back and do that. Let’s run what we run.’ Our secondary did a great job. Part of those adjustments was matching down on them.”
