Utah vs. Washington State Postgame Quotes

Recap |  Final Stats |  Notes

Utah Head Coach Kyle Whittingham

On reaction to the game...
"Number one, it's tough to spot them a couple pick-sixes in the first quarter and have a chance to win, although we did. We battled back, and from that point on I thought our offense did some really good things but we got in such a hole there early that was tough to come back from. Their skill on offense absolutely throttled our skill on defense. Their receivers and their quarterback dominated our pass coverage. That was the real difference in the game. That was the biggest difference. Their quarterback and receivers did a great job and threw for a ton of yards.

"We gave up too many big plays. I think there were five explosives. To us, explosives are 20 yards or more. So it's tough to win a game when you are giving up that many explosive plays, but even tougher when they throw the ball as well as they did."

On comeback made by Utah...
"This is a resilient group, and they've done that all year long. Still, we've got to get W's. That's the bottom line. We've got a bunch of high character, tough kids and we have just got to get better. We've got our work cut out for us in recruiting at the perimeter. We have been saying it all year long - that is where we've got to make some ground up."

On not becoming bowl eligible...
"I'm very disappointed. It's a huge disappointment for the seniors, not personally. I want to get into a bowl game for the seniors. It's all about the players, not the coaches. It's about the players and it's hard to deal with when they're not going to be able to go to a bowl game."

On quarterback's performance...
"I thought he grew today as a quarterback. I thought he took a step forward. After those two pick-sixes, that could have been something where he went into a little bit of a shock, but he didn't. He hung in there and he kept his head up and finished with some pretty good numbers."

On Washington State offense...
"Coach Leach's scheme is tough to defend in the throw game. We couldn't cover them in man. We were thinking going into the game that we could match up man-to-man enough to play a dose of it, but it was very apparent that we were not matching up. In zone coverage we got disoriented with the under-coverage and they found those holes. Their quarterback is very good. I think he's an NFL guy personally."

Utah Quarterback Adam Schulz

On early pick-sixes...
"Giving the team two pick-sixes off the bat obviously is not helping the team. It's completely on me, on my shoulders, all of it. There's not much of a worse feeling than disappointing everybody."

On offense after the pick-sixes...
"I think we were able to move the ball. We settled in as an offense as a whole and didn't try to do too much. We started clicking."

"We were able to pass the ball. The offensive line did a great job protecting. Receivers made plays. The first two are on me, all on my shoulders."

Utah DE/LB Trevor Reilly

On disappointment over the loss...
"I'm pretty disappointed. I spent five years in this program and the last two, no bowl game. I feel sorry for the fans and alumni more than anything that we let them down again."

On mentality after going down 21 points in the first quarter...
"I wasn't too worried about that because I knew we could move the ball. Obviously we came back and were within a score. Defensively we just didn't cover well enough and we didn't get to the quarterback. Give them credit though, they threw the ball up in one-on-one situations and they made plays. The quarterback got rid of the ball before we could get a lot of pressure to him."
