Utah's three practices this week will be highlighted by the first scrimmage of the spring on Friday, Apr. 4 at 4 p.m. in Rice-Eccles Stadium. It is Utah's only Friday practice this spring. Leading up to the scrimmage will be practices on Tuesday and Thursday. All outdoor practices and scrimmages in the spring are open to the public.

Starting senior linebacker Jacoby Hale injured his knee last week in practice and will miss the remainder of spring camp, as well as fall camp. He hopes to return sometime during the 2014 season ... Sophomore Uaea Masina replaces Hale as the starter at stud linebacker and safety Brian Blechen will back up ... Walk-on Tanner Larsen, who redshirted as a freshman in 2011 before leaving for a church mission from which he recently returned, will back up starter Gionni Paul at middle linebacker ... Sophomore OL J.J. Dielman has been turning heads with his play at tackle. He is the co-starter at left tackle this week with Andrew Albers and is also playing well at right tackle ... Competition is stiff at running back, where JC transfer Devontae Booker and redshirt freshman Troy McCormick open the week as co-backups, but are pushing junior Bubba Poole for the top spot ... Sophomore receiver Dominique Hatfield is having a great spring and gets the starting reps in place of junior Kenneth Scott (coming back from injury) during live tackle drills ... At tight end, junior Evan Moeai has moved into a draw with sophomore Siale Fakailoatonga behind starter Westlee Tonga.

In addition to Jacoby Hale, several other players are out for all of part of spring ball, including these projected starters and key backups (all but Hale are expected to be available for fall camp): right guard Junior Salt, linebacker Jason Whittingham and defensive tackle Sese Ianu, defensive tackle Stevie Tu'ikolovatu, safety Tevin Carter, running back Lucky Radley, defensive tackle Viliseni Fauonuku, defensive lineman Sam Tevi and offensive lineman Derek Tuimauga.
