The Utes are down to their last two weeks of spring football camp and practices this week are scheduled for Tuesday (3-5 p.m.) and Thursday (3-5 p.m.), with a scrimmage on Saturday (10 a.m.-noon). All outdoor practices and scrimmages during spring ball are open to the public. While practice locations are decided the day of, all scrimmages are scheduled for Rice-Eccles Stadium.


Junior Viliseni Fauonuku came off the injured list last week and takes over as a starter at defensive tackle ... Junior Jason Fanaika, a Utah State transfer who redshirted last season, is the co-starter at right end with sophomore Hunter Dimick. Fanaika also plays defensive tackle ... Sophomore Hipolito Corporan, has moved from corner to safety and now backs up Brian Blechen at strong safety. Blechen will also see time at linebacker ... Starting senior free safety Eric Rowe is getting equal reps at corner, where he is the co-starter this week with senior Davion Orphey ... Senior Greg Reese, who requested a switch from tight end to defensive end last week, will stay at defensive end ... In other roster moves, redshirt freshman McKay Murphy has switched from the defensive line to the offensive line ... Redshirt freshman Clarence Smith, a 217-pound defensive back when he joined the Utes last fall, began spring ball as a linebacker and is now a 240-pound defensive end.


Head Coach Kyle Whittingham singled out quarterback Travis Wilson, tight end Westlee Tonga and kicker Andy Phillips for praise following the first scrimmage of the spring on Apr. 4. Wilson had his best day of spring camp, throwing for 182 yards and five touchdowns. Tonga, coming off last fall's season-ending injury, caught three balls for 41 yards and two touchdowns. (The leading receiver was Dres Anderson with three receptions for 114 yards and two touchdowns). Phillips connected on 8-of-9 field goal attempts, including 4-of-4 from 40-yards and out, with a long of 53 yards. Headlining the ground game were Marcus Sanders-Williams (73 yards, 1 TD) and Bubba Poole (45 yards). Poole also caught a 12-yard TD pass from Wilson.


The TRAX and UTA routes that service Rice-Eccles Stadium on regular-season game days will also provide free transportation to the Red-White spring game on Apr. 19.
