THIS WEEK

The Utah football team will engage in three practices this week, prior to concluding camp with the seventh-annual Red-White spring game on Saturday, April 18 at 1 p.m. in Rice-Eccles Stadium. The final tackling practice of the spring is Tuesday, followed by a no-tackle practice Thursday, and a short walk-through on Friday. Practices on Tuesday and Thursday are scheduled for 3-5 p.m., while Friday's session will run for about an hour starting at 4:15 p.m. Practice locations are dependent on weather/field conditions.

AUTOGRAPHS AND MORE

The 2009 Ute football team will sign autographs after Saturday's Red-White game in Rice-Eccles Stadium ... Admission and parking to the game are free ... Pre-game festivities in the stadium include a MUSS scrimmage (11 a.m.) and an Alumni game (noon) ... The Deseret First Duel championship trophy will be presented at halftime of the Red-White game. Utah, which clinched the rivalry series victory back on Feb. 28, swept home and away contests against the Cougars in volleyball, women's basketball and gymnastics, won the only meeting in football and men's tennis, and went 1-1 in men's basketball.

COACH CLASH

While the teams for the Red-White game won't be chosen until Wednesday, the coaching staffs are in place. New defensive line coach John Pease has been designated as the head coach of the Red team, assisted by Jay Hill, Dave Schramm, J.D. Williams and offensive graduate assistant Zac Connors. Head coach of the White team is new offensive line coach Blake Miller, assisted by Aaron Roderick, Kalani Sitake, Aaron Alford and Morgan Scalley.

SPRING GAME NOTES

If a team falls behind by more than 10 points, it will retain possession after its next score ... There will be no slanting, blitzing, twisting, bluffing, etc, by the defense. A violation of the basic defensive structure, which is rush four and drop seven, will result in a 15-yard penalty ... There will be no punt or kickoff returns. Punts will be kicked to "air," meaning the return team will get the ball at the spot of a fair catch. In place of kickoffs, the teams will start their opening drives from the 35-yard line ... The quarterbacks will be off limits to tacklers. All three quarterbacks (Corbin Louks, Terrance Cain and Jordan Wynn) will play ... Many established starters on both sides of the ball will sit out of the spring game to avoid the potential for injury and to give the backups more time to make an impression ... Missing the spring game with injuries will be DB Justin Taplin-Ross (fractured finger), OL Tevita Stevens (ankle) and LB Isi Filimoeatu (knee) ... The first two quarters will be 10 minutes of a normal clock, followed by an eight-minute halftime. The second half will be two 10-minute quarters of a running clock.

CLASS OF 85

For the first time of Kyle Whittingham's head coaching career, the Utes will have a full complement of 85 players on scholarship in fall camp.
