Utah punter Tom Hackett and kicker Andy Phillips were touted as preseason All-Americans in the recently released Phil Steele's College Football Review. Hackett was a second-team selection, while Phillips was named to the preseason All-America third team.
The football publication projects that Hackett and Phillips will be named first-team all-Pac-12 Conference at their respective positions in 2014. Hackett is the reigning first-team all-Pac-12 punter after leading the league in punt yards (3,300), average (43.4), punts inside the 20 (27, tie) and punts of 50+ yards (19) as a sophomore last year.
Phillips, a Lou Groza semifinalist and an honorable mention all-Pac-12 kicker (first team by Phil Steele) as a freshman last year, tied for second in the Pac-12 in field goal percentage (85%, 17-of-20).
Hackett and Phillips led a contingent of 10 Utes on Phil Steele's preseason all-Pac-12 teams. Receiver Dres Anderson and returner Geoffrey Norwood were second-team projections, offensive tackle Jeremiah Poutasi and defensive end Nate Orchard made Phil Steele's third team and running back Devontae Booker, linebacker Jason Whittingham and defensive backs Eric Rowe and Brian Blechen were picked for the fourth team.
