SALT LAKE CITY -
The Utah football team, which finished the 2004 season ranked No. 5 in the USA Today Coaches' Poll (No. 4 in the Associated Press rankings), finished three spots out of the top 25 in the 2005 preseason poll. Utah was the only team that finished in the top 15 last year to not crack the top 25 in the preseason poll. Utah's 103 votes was third most of the Others Receiving Votes category and was 90 points behind No. 25 Pittsburgh--a team the Utes beat in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.

The Utes, who were recently picked to defend their Mountain West Conference title by the media attending the MWC Football Preview, began the 2004 season with a No. 21 Coaches' ranking. Utah was ranked in the top 25 in both polls from start to finish of the 2004 season--a new school record. Utah's No. 4 (A.P.) and No. 5 (Coaches') final rankings were also its best ever.

The Utes open their 2005 season on Friday, Sept. 2 vs. Arizona in Salt Lake City in an ESPN nationally televised game. Utah also has ESPN dates on Sept. 15 at TCU and on Sept. 22 vs. Air Force in Rice-Eccles-Stadium.
