* Double days began today for the Utah football team, which also got its first chance to run around on the new turf in Rice-Eccles Stadium. Coach Kyle Whittingham and his staff conducted a 21-period practice before excusing the players for lunch.

* Later in the afternoon, the offense and defense will hold meetings for about an hour, and then will head to Ute Baseball Field for the final practice session of the day. The evening practice is expected to conclude at around 6:30 p.m.

* After six practices, Whittingham says, "We are where we need to be going into our first scrimmage (Thursday). We're on pace on both sides of the ball. The defense is always ahead early in camp but the offense is dong a decent job of moving the ball in live situations."

* Positions in the spotlight during tomorrow's scrimmage will be quarterback, offensive right guard, the dime corners (third and four corners) and the backup running backs. "Matt Asiata won't play much, if at all, so we can watch the guys battling for the No. 2 job," says Whittingham. He said Eddie Wide and Sausan Shakerin are the leading candidates to spell Asiata, but added that Ray Stowers is still in the mix.

* Several starters in addition to Asiata will watch from the sidelines during Thursday's scrimmage. "We don't need to see the guys who have played a lot of football for us," explains Whittingham.

* What are the coaches looking for in the first scrimmage of camp? Execution on offense and tackling on defense. "Our ability to tackle has been our forte on defense for many years," says Whittingham.

* Today's Stars: Receiver Jereme Brooks and newly converted cornerback Ryan Lacy. "Ryan is a natural fit at corner," praised Whittingham. "We are always looking for good cover corners."

* The injury pit was quiet today with the return of Zane Beadles and Sean Sellwood to the "active" list. While Sellwood was available, the Utes did not conduct punting drills in the morning.
