Travis Wilson completed 12-of-18 passes for 281 yards and two touchdowns during a nearly two-hour scrimmage in Rice-Eccles Stadium Saturday morning. Coach Kyle Whittingham praised Wilson and an improved throw game, even while noting it was hard to evaluate the defense with all-conference candidates Tenny Palepoi, Trevor Reilly and Eric Rowe sitting out.

"Overall it was a very productive scrimmage," said Whittingham. "Travis Wilson had a good day and solidified himself as the starter. The offense showed improvement, but we still need to improve our consistency, and eliminate turnovers and penalties in two-minute and red zone situations. With the players we have out right now, we may not know where we stand on defense until Aug. 29 (Utah's home opener)."

The day's biggest play came when Wilson and the No. 1 offense were backed up on their own 1-yard line against the No. 1 defense. On first down, the sophomore connected with tight end Jake Murphy, who ran 82 yards downfield before finally getting caught on the 17-yard line by Michael Walker. Two plays later, Wilson hit Dres Anderson on a 16-yard pass play. Kelvin York ran the ball in for a 1-yard score.

Murphy finished with two catches for 125 yards and Anderson had another big day, catching three passes for 92 yards and a touchdown. The leading rusher was Lucky Radley with eight rushes for 45 yards. York ran 11 times for 18 yards and two TDs.

Adam Schulz (5-for-8, 58 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT), Brandon Cox (1-3, 13 yards) and Conner Manning (8-12, 70 yards, 1TD) took turns quarterbacking the second string. Whittingham said Schulz is No. 2 coming out of the camp's final scrimmage (a previously scheduled scrimmage on Aug. 22 has been changed to a practice).

For the defense, Brian Blechen intercepted a pass thrown by Manning and returned it six yards. Hunter Dimick and Sam Tevi both recorded sacks and Keith McGill and V.J. Fehoko had pass breakups. The scrimmage ended with a bang when Whittingham's son Alex Whittingham intercepted a pass and returned it 47 yards for a touchdown during a skirmish between the No. 3 offense and No. 3 defense.

Andy Phillips kept a firm grip on the place kicking job, making 3-of-4 field goal attempts, including a long try from 48 yards out.
