QUICKLY

The final scrimmage of the season will be held on Aug. 22 and will be closed in its entirety to the public and for all but that final 30 minutes to the media. Media will be admitted starting at 10:30 a.m. ... Junior quarterback Brian Johnson announced on Aug. 17 that he will redshirt this season because his surgically-repaired knee is not 100-percent healed. Listed as co-starters going into the week are senior Brett Ratliff and junior Tommy Grady. The coaches hope to name a starter by at least Tuesday ... The final double-day practice is Aug. 21 and camp concludes with a morning session on Aug. 22 (see left column for this week's practice schedule) ... Classes and the regular-season practice schedule begin on Wednesday.

CAMP NOTES

The team elected the following as captains for the 2006 season: Brett Ratliff, Eric Weddle, Kelly Talavou, Tavo Tupola and Casey Evans ... The emergence of a couple of newcomers has the potential to shake up the projected plans for the defense. True freshman Stevenson Sylvester has worked his way into the two deep and possibly higher at rover linebacker. Any downs Sylvester plays when Utah is in its 4-3 package will free up Casey Evans to move back to free safety, where he was a second-team all-leaguer a year ago. That would shift Steve Tate to strong safety and allow All-America candidate Eric Weddle more time at corner ... Junior college transfer Aaron Tonga is making waves at tackle, where the Utes run at least six deep. Kelly Talavou (tackle) and Paul Soliai (nose guard) are the starters, but they'll be able to stay fresh with Tonga, Kenape Eliapo, Pauli Latu, Derek Beardall and Zeke Wily ready to step in.
