Utah concludes its preseason camp Tuesday with a closed scrimmage at the stadium ... Practices will remain open to the public during the season ... Players begin classes on Wednesday, also the start of their regular season training schedule ... Ute Baseball Field will return to its original purpose after Monday's practice. From here on out, the football team will practice at the Thomas McCarthey Practice Fields or Rice-Eccles Stadium ... The Utes will run a dress rehearsal of sorts after practice on Wednesday--doing a game-simulation of substitutions, special teams, etc.

Utah's practices will start and end an hour earlier this year than in the past for academic reasons. New head coach Kyle Whittingham had observed during his lengthy tenure as Utah's defensive coordinator that players with evening classes had difficulty getting to their 6 p.m. classes on time. So he changed the practice schedule to accommodate them. Practices will now conclude at 5:00 p.m.

The weekly Utah football press conferences will begin on Monday, Aug. 29 in the Dee Glen Smith Athletics Center auditorium. The time of the press conference has been moved to noon due to the earlier practice schedule this year. Head coach Kyle Whittingham and four players will be available each week at the press conference, which will be replayed on Utah's web site (utahutes.com) every Monday afternoon.

Tuesday's scrimmage will consist of 80 plays--about 20 fewer than the previous two. Most of the starters will see limited or no action in the final scrimmage ... Senior Kite Afeaki has officially moved from nose guard to end, where he will start in Utah's normal 4-3 package. When the Utes are in their nickel or dime defense, the starting ends will be Martail Burnett and Alex Puccinelli ... To get its best receivers on the field, Brian Hernandez is listed in the two deep at both H receiver (where he is the co-starter with Brent Casteel) and at X receiver. He will back up starter Travis LaTendresse at the X ... A late start for junior college transfer Brett Ratliff cost him a place in the depth chart his first week, but he has now solidified himself as the No. 2 quarterback behind starter Brian Johnson ... Redshirt junior tight end Ameen Shaheen has shown enough versatility that the coaches like him as an "H-back." He'll play as either a tight end or a fullback when he's in the game.
