Dec. 9, 2010

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -
Utah senior punt returner Shaky Smithson was announced as a first-team Walter Camp All-American tonight on the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show, while senior offensive guard Caleb Schlauderaff made the second team.

Smithson has now made four All-America teams.

The Walter Camp All-America team, the nation's oldest All-America team, is in its 121st year and is selected by the 120 Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors. The 2010 edition features 26 players on the first team, due to a tie in the kick returner category between Smithson and Toledo's Eric Page.

Smithson and Schlauderaff's awards bring Utah's all-time Walter Camp All-America total to seven. Smithson is one of three first-team Utes, joining offensive lineman Jordan Gross in 2002 and kicker Louie Sakoda in 2008. Schlauderaff becomes the third Ute offensive lineman chosen to the team and the second in as many years (Zane Beadles was a second-team selection in 2009). Other Utah second-team Walter Camp All-Americans were quarterback Alex Smith in 2004 and defensive back Eric Weddle in 2006. All of Utah's previous Walter Camp All-Americans, with the exception of Sakoda, are currently playing in the NFL.

Smithson will be honored along with the other first-team Walter Camp All-Americans at a national awards banquet in New Haven, Conn.--home to the Walter Camp Foundation--on Jan. 15.

It marks the fourth All-America team for Smithson, who leads the nation in punt return average (19.72), punt return yards (572) and 100-yard punt return games (4). He has returned two punts for touchdowns. Smithson was also voted a first team all-purpose back by Scout/FoxSports.com, a second-team punt returner by CBSSports.com and a third-team returner by Rivals.com.

A three-time Mountain West Conference Player of the Week, Smithson also returns kicks and plays receiver for the Utes. He set the Mountain West Conference record for punt return yards in a season while also becoming the first Ute to record 500 yards in punt returns in a season.

Schlauderaff receives his second All-America honor. He was previously named a Scout/FoxSports.com second-team All-American. Schlauderaff was a first-team all-Mountain West Conference offensive guard.
