This Week: The Utah men's golf team travels to Provo, Utah, to play in the Cougar Classic Golf Tournament. The two-day tournament runs Tues., April 21 through Wed., April 22. Sixteen teams will participate in the event, including highly ranked teams from Colorado State (No. 17), host Brigham Young (No. 21), UTEP (No. 26) and Kansas (No. 31). The 54 hole format has 36 holes being played on Tuesday and 18 on Wednesday. The tournament will feature six-player teams, with the top four of six scores counted for each round.
About the Utes: Utah tied for second place at the Grand Canyon/Thunderbird Invitational in Phoenix, Ariz., on April 13-14. The Utes shot a three round total of 888, finishing just three shots off the lead. Jon Morgan, who won the 1996 Grand Canyon Invite, finished just one shot off the individual lead at one under par to capture second place. John Owen, who won the tournament last year, and Shawn Edwards finished tied for 17th at eight over par for the Utes. Gregg Oliphant was just one shot behind Owen and Edwards at nine over par. Clint Christiansen finished 79th.
Looking Ahead: The Cougar Classic finishes off the regular season for the Utes. Utah will then participate in the Western Athletic Conference Championships at Poppy Hills, Calif. The tournament will be hosted by San Jose State and runs April 27-April 29.
