THIS WEEK:

The University of Utah men's golf team travels to Reno, Nev., to compete in the 29th annual Wolf Pack Invitational, hosted by the University of Nevada-Reno. The tournament will take place at the ArrowCreek Golf Course, and will consist of three rounds; two on Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2005, and the final round on Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2005. Last year, the Utes finished tied for 12th out of 18 teams.

PURPLE & RED INVITATIONAL RECAP:

LAYTON, Utah - Utah sophomore Dustin Pimm claimed the overall individual title with a stellar final round at the Purple and Red Invitational, held at the 72-par Valley View Golf Course. Pimm set a new course record, as well as a tournament record, with an 8-under par 64 in the final round. Pimm finished 14-under par overall (202) to outdistance himself from second place by five strokes.

Overall, Utah finished fourth with an overall score of 869 (+5). Santa Clara won the tournament with a 9-under par 855, followed by a two-way tie for second with Weber State and Boise State finishing at 7-under par (857).

Senior Steve Newren claimed 21st place overall, shooting even par in the final round to finish overall at 3-over par (219). Newren was followed by sophomore Chris Gresh, who finished at 4-over par (220), after shooting a 74 in the final round to finish tied for 22nd place.

Freshman Mike Branca shot a 79 (+7) in the final round to finish tied for 56th place with a three-round score of 229 (+13). Nick Carter shot a 6-over par 78 to finish out the tournament in 73rd place with an overall score of 234 (+18).

Competing individually from Utah, freshman Chancellor Cota wrapped up his first collegiate tournament by shooting a 1-over par 73 in the final round to finish tied for 43rd overall with a three-round score of 226 (+10). Senior Nick Micek shot a 75 (+3) in the final round to finish tied for 58th with a score of 230 (+14). Sophomore Chace Bickmore claimed 83rd place overall after shooting a 10-over par 82 in the final round to finish with a three-round score of 244 (+28).
