ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of Utah men's tennis team (2-0) vanquished the Cal Poly Mustangs (0-4) Saturday at the Linda Estes Tennis Complex. The Utes captured the doubles point and junior Cedric Willems clinched Utah's sweep at the No. 3 singles position.
Although Ute juniors Slim Hamza and Willems fell in doubles action to Marco Comuzzo and Matt Thompson, 6-4, at the top position, seniors Ben Tasevac and Devin Lane easily posted Utah's first victory of the day at the No. 3 spot. The duo handily defeated Naveen Beasley and Gannon Daynes.
Freshman Patrick Mayer quickly put the Utes up 2-0 in singles play when he topped Barber at the No. 6 spot, 6-2, 6-2. Medinilla then turned in a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Derek Klein at the No. 2 slot.
Willems then defeated Corey Pang 6-4, 6-5(6) at the third position and the Utes wrapped up the match.
Utah returns to the courts Sunday against No. 67 New Mexico at 10 a.m. MT.
