No. 52 Slim Hamza clinched the double-header matches for Utah.
SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team (6-0) shut out Montana State (3-2) and Utah State (2-5) Saturday at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center. No. 52 sophomore Slim Hamza captured the match deciding points against both the Bobcats, 7-0, and the Aggies, 6-1.

The Utes began the day against Montana State. In doubles action, junior Ben Tasevac and sophomore Cedric Willems topped Prithiv Sivasubramaniam and Javier Martin-Morillas, 8-6, at the third slot.

Junior Devin Lane and sophomore Slim Hamza then fell to Niklas Brandes and Diego Campos Contreras at the No. 1 spot, 8-4, setting up senior Dmytro Mamedov and junior Alejandro Medinilla to clinch the doubles point at the second spot. Mamedov and Medinilla then vanquished Harry James and Markus Schleuter, 8-4.

In singles play, the Utes quickly went up 3-0 with two 6-0, 6-0 shut outs at the Nos. 6 and 3 positions. Sophomore Rafael Davidian blanked Kenny Dodd at the No. 6 position, while Medinilla then, vanquished Schleuter at the third spot.

Utah then clinched the match at 4-0 when No. 52 Hamza routed Brandes, 6-2, 7-5 at the No. 1 slot. No. 85 Mamedov then followed with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Martin-Morillas, making the score 5-0.

Tasevac then battled Campos at the No. 4 spot to a pulse-pounding 4-6, 6-3, 10-2 win. Finally, Lane topped James, 7-6(4), 6-2 at the No. 5 position, completing the 7-0 sweep.

Utah returned to action for the second match of the day against Utah State. Despite dropping the doubles point, the Utes easily captured six consecutive singles victories.

Lane downed Sean Levesque at the sixth slot, 6-0, 6-4, while Willems downed Marcus Fritz at the No. 3 position, 6-1, 6-2, putting the Utes up 2-1.

At the second slot, No. 85 Mamedov bested Fredrick Peterson, 6-2, 6-3, setting up No. 52 Hamza for the match clincher. Hamza then captured a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Sven Poslusny at the top spot, deciding the match for Utah at 4-1.

Tasevac and Medinilla then posted the Utes' last two points at the Nos. 4 and 5 spots, respectively. Tasevac routed Matt Sweet, 6-4, 7-5, while Medinilla topped Curran Wearmouth, 6-4, 6-2.

In doubles play, Lane and Hamza teamed up at the No. 1 position to capture an 8-1 victory over Poslusny and Fritz. Medinilla and Mamedov then fell to Levesque and Peterson, 8-4, at the second slot. At the third slot, Willems and Tasevac were unable to clinch the doubles point for Utah, falling two Sweet and Andrew Whiting, 8-6, giving the Aggies the doubles point.

Utah continues their homestand next weekend with a pair of matches against Denver Friday at 5 p.m. and UNLV Saturday at 12 p.m.
