SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah Men's Tennis team concluded an undefeated month of January by sweeping Monatana State Friday Night at the Eccles Tennis Center, by a score of 7-0. The Utes are now 4-0 on the year, and looking forward to hitting the road for the first time next week. They will travel to the state Arizona to play back to back games againt Arizona and Arizona State.
In last night's victory, Senior Paul McPherson, Junior Philippe Rodrigue, Junior Ben Coates and Junior Alex Buxton all won for the fourth consecutive time this season. The Utes No. 5 seed, Ryan Snow downed Montana State's Kyle Hanson 7-5 7-6, and No. 6 seed Adam Eke defeated Chris Tokar 6-3 6-1.
In doubles play, Utah won two of the three matches. Coates and Rodrigue beat Reeder and Hanson 8-4, and McPherson and Snow topped Hauck and Tokar 8-4. The only Montana State win of the night came by way of Daniel and Owen who defeated Utah's duo of Eke and Zenger.
Although the 7-0 score implies an easy victory, the Utes had some very hard faught matches. No. 4 Alex Buxton was down 3-5 in the third set to Kevin Reeder. Reeder had one match point that was lost on a Buxton winner. Buxton went on to break Reeder's serve twice and win the third set 7-5.
