LAS VEGAS - The 53rd-ranked University of Utah men's tennis team (12-3) captured their second victory of the weekend Friday against No. 70 Marquette (9-6) by a score of 4-3. The Utes netted the doubles point while senior Alejandro Medinilla decided the match from the No. 3 singles position.

"Today was a great team effort," said assistant coach Roeland Brateanu. "We started off with a lot of passion and energy in doubles and were able to hold onto our lead throughout singles. We now have two weeks to prepare for Pac-12 play when we host Stanford and Cal in Salt Lake City."

Medinilla and sophomore Matt Cowley posted Utah's first win of the day when they defeated Cameron Tehrani and Nick Dykema at the No. 3 doubles position, 8-6. The Golden Eagles then answered with a victory from the second slot when Gleb Skylr and Logon Collins defeated seniors Ben Tasevac and Devin Lane, 8-4.

But juniors Cedric Willems and Slim Hamza wouldn't give up the doubles point that easily, taking their match at the top spot against Dan Mamalat and Vukasin Teofanovic, 8-6.

The Utes quickly went up 2-0 in singles play when Cowley routed Kristiyan Trukov, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 6 position. The score then became 2-1 when Tasevac lost to Teofanovic at the No. 2 spot, 6-3, 6-4.

Marquette then tied the match at two apiece when freshman Patrick Mayer dropped a 6-0, 6-4 decision to Tehrani at the fifth slot. Hamza then put Utah back up with a 7-5, 7-5 victory at the No. 1 spot over Mamalat, setting up Medinilla for the match deciding point.

After easily taking the first set 2-6, Lane put in a solid effort against Dykema, but unable to net a win in the subsequent sets, falling 7-6(4), 7-6(4) at the No. 4 position, tying the match up again at 3-3. Medinilla then bested Collins at the third slot, 7-6(5), 6-4, capturing the fourth and final point of the match for the Utes.

The Utes will enjoy a weekend off before opening Pac-12 Conference play at the Eccles Tennis Center against Stanford and No. 20 California.
