TUCSON, Ariz - The University of Utah men's tennis team (12-11, 1-6 Pac-12) netted its first conference victory Saturday against Arizona (5-17, 0-7 Pac-12) at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center. Utah managed to clinch the doubles point and four singles victories for the 5-2 win.
Senior Benito Suriano and junior Dmytro Mamedov then earned Utah the doubles point when the duo bested Sebastian Ionescu and Sumeet Shinde, 8-6. With the doubles point already decided, sophomore Alejandro Medinilla and freshman Ace Matias's match at the No. 3 position against Andre Vidaller and Mario Urquidi was then left unfinished at 7-6.
Going into singles play with a 1-0 lead, No. 70 Hamza downed Shinde at the third slot, 6-3, 6-0, to post Utah's second point. Suriano then netted his first victory over a conference opponent, topping Vidaller, 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 1 position, extending the Utes' lead to 3-0.
Freshman Rafael Davidian then suffered a 6-3, 6-3 loss at the No. 4 spot to Bermudez, making the score 3-1. Arizona then saw their second point when Lane dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to Kieren Thompson at the No. 5 slot.
Utah then captured the match clinching point with a tight 6-3, 7-6(5) victory from Medinilla at the No. 6 position over Ionescu.
