OJAI, Calif. - The 74th-ranked University of Utah men's tennis team was defeated, 5-0, by the third-seeded and 18th-ranked California Golden Bears Thursday at Libbey Park in the quarterfinal round of the 2013 Pac-12 Championships.
Despite Utah falling in all four singles matches played, Medinilla and Lane gave solid efforts at the Nos. 3 and 4 singles positions, respectively.
After senior Dmytro Mamedov dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to No. 82 Christoffer Konigsfeldt at the top spot, Medinilla took his first set 2-6 at the No. 3 spot. However, he was unable to clinch the following two sets against No. 62 Campbell Johnson, falling, 6-1, 6-0, making the score 3-0 in favor of the Golden Bears.
Although Lane captured a 4-6 win in his first set at the fourth slot, he was ultimately unable to take the next two and fell 6-1, 6-0, against Bayane, which gave Cal the match deciding point at 4-0. Singles matches at the fifth and first positions were then abandonded.
Junior Ben Tasevac then suffered a 6-1, 7-5 loss to Chase Melton at the No. 6 position, making the final score 5-0 in favor of Cal.
