LAS VEGAS - The University of Utah men's tennis team saw several Utes capture victories Wednesday at the ITA Mountain Regional Championships at the Darling Tennis Center to advance to the round of 32 in both singles and doubles competition.
Ben Tasevac, seeded No. 23, easily turned in Utah's first victory the day, vanquishing Nevada-Reno's Vlad Shchetininn, 6-1, 6-1, in the round of 128. The senior then followed up with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Utah State's Matt Sweet. Tasevac will take on sixth-seeded Francis Sargeant of BYU Thursday at 10 a.m. PT in the round of 32.
Twenty-fifth-seeded senior Devin Lane topped Ryan Garner of Weber State, 6-3, 6-4, in the round of 128. He then followed with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Montana State's Markus Schleuter and will face 14th-seeded Garrett Patton of Boise State Thursday at 11:15 a.m. PT in the round of 32.
After enjoying a bye in the round of 128, third-seeded junior Slim Hamza topped New Mexico's Mads Hegelund, 6-1, 7-6, in the round of 64. He is slated to battle 22nd-seeded Andrey Goryachkov of BYU Thursday at 11:30 a.m. PT. Hamza already has secured a win this season over Goryachkov in last weekend's Utah Intercollegiate Tournament.
Despite turning in wins for the Utes in the round of 128, four individuals were unable to advance in competition after the round of 64. Eleventh-seeded senior Alejandro Medinilla routed Utah State's Matt Thatcher 6-1, 6-1, but suffered a hard-fought 4-6, 7-6, 6-3, loss to Dennis Baumgartner of Utah State. Eighteenth-seeded junior Cedric Willems defeated Oliver Good of Weber State, 6-2, 7-6, but then dropped a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 decision to Montana's Andrew Warren. Junior Cameron Lee topped Josh Goodwin of Idaho State, 6-3, 6-3, then fell to 13th-seeded Liam Goldberg of New Mexico State, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. Sophomore Justin Archer battled Weber State's Anthony Trabert to a 7-6, 1-6, 6-3 victory, but then lost to 12th-seeded Artemiy Nekitin of Idaho, 6-0, 6-2.
Medinilla and Tasevac did not fair so well in doubles, falling to New Mexico's James Hignett and Sam Iftikhar, 8-3, in the round of 64. The duo will battled Robert Allan and Victor Ouvard of Nevada-Reno in the first round of consolation play Thursday at 9:45 a.m. Archer, who teamed up with Boise State's Abe Hewko, dropped an 8-2 decision to Alex Grubbs and Andrew Parks of Air Force in the round of 64, and will face Utah State's Sean Levesque and Fredrik Peterson in the consolation draw Thursday at 10 a.m. PT.
