LAS VEGAS - The University of Utah men's tennis team completed the first day of play at the ITA Mountain Regional Championships Wednesday at the Darling Tennis Center. Six Utes advanced in the singles draw, while three doubles duos advanced in the doubles draw.
In the first round of singles play, 24th-seeded junior Devin Lane battled Montana's Ethan Vaughn to a close 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-3 victory, as 25th-seeded junior Alejandro Medinilla bested Phillip Hinojosa of Nevada Reno, 6-2, 7-5. Junior Ben Tasevac also came up with a win for the Utes, topping Dominic Bermudez of Northern Arizona, 1-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Thursday, Lane faces New Mexico State's Yannick Blank at 10 a.m., while Medinilla takes on Naveen Manivannan, also of New Mexico State. Tasevac is slated to battle 21st-seeded Fabio Biasion of Denver at 11:30 a.m.
Utah's second-seeded sophomore Slim Hamza, third-seeded senior Dmytro Mamedov, and 19th-seeded sophomore Rafael Davidian all enjoyed byes in the first round. Mamedov will battle New Mexico's Simon Hegelund Thursday at 11:30 a.m., as Hamza faces Alex Clinkenbeard of Denver. Davidian will take on New Mexico State's Germain Degardin at 11 a.m.
After capturing a 4-6 victory in the first set, redshirt freshman Justin Archer was ultimately unable to take the next two sets against Grant Taylor of Air Force, falling 6-2, 6-2, tallying Utah's only loss for the day. Archer enjoys a bye in the first round of consolation play Thursday.
Thursday at 9 a.m. in the round of 32, Tasevac and Davidian face BYU's ninth-seeded Keaton Cullimore and John Pearce as Mamedov and Medinilla battle Clinkenbeard and Preben Bjorne of Denver. Lane and Hamza will take on Northern Arizona's Kester Black and Shaun Waters.
