LAS VEGAS - The University of Utah men's tennis team continued to compete at the ITA Mountain Regionals at the Darling Tennis Center Thursday. Junior Slim Hamza is the only Ute remaining in the singles main draw, while he and partner senior Devin Lane, as well as Utah's duo of juniors Cedric Willems and Cameron Lee advanced in doubles action.
Third-seeded and no. 84 Hamza easily turned in a victory for the Utes over BYU's 22nd-seeded Andrey Goryachkov, 6-2, 6-1, in the round of 32. He will face ninth-seeded Henry Craig of Denver Friday in the round of 16 at 11:30 a.m. PT.
In other singles matches, senior Ben Tasevac fell to sixth-seeded Francis Sargeant of BYU, 6-3, 6-3, while Lane was defeated by Boise State's Garrett Patton, 6-3, 7-6(0).
In the singles consolation draw, senior Alejandro Medinilla netted a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Dylan Harlow of Utah State and will take on Denys Pume of UNLV at 11:15 a.m. PT in the second round. Willems topped Northern Colorado's Austin Mayo, 6-3, 6-0, at will face James Hignett of New Mexico Friday at 10 a.m. PT. Junior Cameron Lee lost to Brian Cunningham of UNLV, 6-4, 7-5, while sophomore Justin Archer fell to New Mexico State's Thomas Douglas, 6-4, 7-6(2).
In doubles competition, Hamza and Lane will face ninth-seeded Douglas and Naveen Marivannan of New Mexico State at 9 a.m. PT Friday in the round of 16 after handing Northern Colorado's Jeff Carlson and Eric Schuermans an 8-2 loss today. Willems and Lee also netted a win to advance, routing Bjorn Scheepbouwer and Jamey Swiggard of Idaho State, 8-4. The pair will battle Weber State's Oliver Good and Sanjay Goswami at 9 a.m. PT Friday.
