LAS VEGAS - The University of Utah men's tennis team saw third-seeded No. 48 senior Dmytro Mamedov advance to the singles round of 16 at the ITA Mountain Regional Championships Thursday at the Darling Tennis Center.

In the round of 64, Mamedov vanquished New Mexico's Simon Hegelund, 6-1, 6-1, then followed with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over 23rd-seeded Daniel Fernandez of New Mexico State. Mamedov is slated to take on Shaun Waters of Northern Arizona Friday at 10 a.m., in the singles round of 16.

In the singles round of 64, 24th-seeded junior Devin Lane bested New Mexico State's Yannick Blank, 6-2, 6-1, as fellow junior 25th-seeded Alejandro Medinilla routed Naveen Manivannan of New Mexico State, 6-4, 6-2. Nineteenth-seeded sophomore Rafael Davidian downed Germain Degardin, also of New Mexico State, 6-3, 6-2.

In the following round, however, Lane, Medinilla, and Davidian were unable to capture victories. Lane dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Air Force's Lane Wilhelm as Medinilla suffered a hard-fought 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 loss to 11th-seeded Nathan Sereke of Boise State. Davidian then fell to Boise State's fifth-seeded Andy Bettles, 6-0, 6-1.

In other singles matches, second-seeded sophomore Slim Hamza was defeated by Denver's Alex Clinkenbeard, 6-3, 7-6(5), while junior Ben Tasevac dropped a 7-5, 6-2 decision to 21st-seeded Fabio Biasion of Denver in the round of 64.

Hamza and Tasevac returned in the second round of singles consolation play capturing 6-2, 6-2 victories over Air Force's Alex Lineberry and Jordan Loughnan of Northern Colorado, respectively. Redshirt freshman Justin Archer also advanced to the third round after his second round opponent, Quentin Mege of Nevada Reno, retired due to injury. Hamza faces Utah State's Matt Sweet, Tasevac takes on Ryan Andrada of Nevada Reno, and Archer battles Hegelund Friday in the third round.

 

 

In the doubles round of 32, sixth-seeded Lane and Hamza netted an 8-5 victory over Kester Black and Shaun Waters of Northern Arizona, while ninth-seeded Mamedov and Medinilla propelled past Denver's Preben Bjorne and Clinkenbeard, 8-2. Lane and Hamza will next battle ninth-seeded Biasion and Max Krammer of Denver, Friday at 9 a.m., in the round of 16, as Mamedov and Medinilla face New Mexico's third-seeded Conor Berg and Jadon Philips.

In other doubles matches, Tasevac and Davidian dropped an 8-4 decision to Keaton Cullimore and John Pearce of BYU.
