SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team (6-9) will host No. 74 TCU (6-11) at the Eccles Tennis Center Sunday at 10 a.m.
Although Utah is currently ranked above TCU in the MWC standings, TCU is rated No. 74 nationally while the Utes remain unranked. TCU's top player is Emanuel Brighiu, who is currently ranked No. 78 and playing with Christopher Price in doubles, is ranked No. 34.
TCU is scheduled to take on Air Force and BYU before coming to Salt Lake.
The Utes are returning home after a three-match weekend in San Diego, Calif. Despite losing all three matches by scores of 5-2, including two to ranked opponents, Utah saw a bright spot in doubles from two pairs. Freshman Alejandro Medinilla and junior Benito Suriano and freshmen Devin Lane and Matt Cowley went 2-1 for the weekend and each clinched a doubles point for the Utes.
Last Time vs. TCU
Utah was defeated by 56th-ranked TCU by a score of 4-3. After dropping the doubles point, Alex Golding fell to Slah Mbarek, 6-2, 6-0, at the No. 3 position, giving the Horned Frogs a 2-0 lead over the Utes. Phillip Eilers gave Utah its first point when he downed Emanuel Brighiu, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 1 spot, making the score 2-1. Stephen Jacobs was defeated by Marius Cristea, 6-4, 6-3, at the No. 5 spot, while Dmytro Mamedov kept the Utes in the match with a victory at the No. 6 position over Kelubia Mebatah, 6-4, 6-3. TCU saw their match clinching point at 4-2 when Jason Smits fell to Zach Nichols, 7-5, 7-6, at the No. 2 spot. Timmy Allin made the final score 4-3 when he topped Christopher Price, 5-7, 7-6, 1-0 at the No. 4 position.
