April 15, 2010

SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis coach F.D. Robbins has announced the signing of Alejandro Gutiérrez and Gino Octa to National Letters of Intent.

"We are extremely proud to announce the commitments of Gino and Alejandro," said head coach F.D. Robbins. "Both players have been prominent players in their home country and we expect them to make an immediate impact on our young line up for next year."

Alejandro Gutiérrez joins the Utes from Mexico City, Mexico. He was ranked among the top five junior players nationally throughout his tennis career and was listed in the top 20 in the National College Tennis Circuit in Mexico throughout high school. Gutiérrez won the ITF Mexico City doubles championship event and was the runner up at the ITF doubles event in Aruba. He has compiled two singles and six doubles National Championship titles in Mexico. Gutiérrez currently holds an ITF ranking of No. 400.

While in high school, Gutiérrez posted a win against current collegian Denis Lin of Stanford during the Casablanca Junior Cup GA, and nearly topped Marcelo Arevalo of Tulsa, then the No. 4-ranked ITF junior at the time. He was recently nominated for High School MVP, which encompasses athletes from all sports, based on his athletic and academic excellence. While attending the University of Utah, Gutiérrez plans to major in Environmental Science.

Gino Octa joins the squad from Toronto, Ontario, where he ranked in the top 10 in his age group from 2006-2009. He captured first place rankings in singles and doubles in Ontario during 2006 for U14 and 2008 for U16. Octa has won four Provincial titles in U14 and U16 singles and doubles, and most recently, captured the U18 doubles title. He has won several national selection championships for U14 and U18. He has also competed internationally, giving the Utes yet another player with experience at the highest level of junior competition.

Still a high school player, Octa already holds winning records against four current collegiate players: Peter Nawara (Cornell), Alex Latosinsky (Detroit Mercy), Justin Jendruch (North Carolina State) and Christian Lee Daigle (Queens University of Charlotte) Octa most recently won the 2010 U18 Indoor Junior Provincial Doubles Championship.
