SALT LAKE CITY - Two players of the University of Utah men's tennis team were named in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's preseason men's single rankings, announced Friday. Senior Dmytro Mamedov has been ranked 48th, while sophomore Slim Hamza sits at No. 37.
"This is the first time since the current ranking system was implemented that we have had two players ranked in the top 100 in the preseason rankings, let alone the top 50," said head coach F.D. Robbins. "Least to say that we are very proud of Dmytro and Slim's achievements and we are very excited that both players automatically qualify for the main draw at the All-American Championships. We look forward to improve on these rankings and for continued success this season."
Mamedov finished the 2011-12 season with a 21-11 overall singles record while going 3-4 in conference play. He also defended a perfect 3-0 record from the No. 1 singles position and went 13-8 at the second slot. During April of this year, he also reached a ranking of 123rd.
Hamza, who joined the Utes in January, held Utah's best conference singles record of 6-1 while going 20-3 overall. He also managed to earn a 3-1 record against nationally-ranked opponents, including a victory over first-ranked USC's No. 13 Daniel Nguyen. Hamza also reached as high as 50th in rankings last season.
