SEATTLE -The Utah women's basketball team defeated Arizona, 66-48, in the first round of the Pac-12 Tournament. It was the first time that the Utes defeated the Wildcats this season after dropping both regular-season games.
The Utes will play third-seeded and 13th-ranked UCLA on Friday, March 8, at 2:30 p.m. PT.
Utah committed just five turnovers in the game, which set a record for the fewest in a Pac-12 Tournament game.
The Utes were buoyed by the three-pointer in the first half, going 11-of-13 from beyond the arc. Utah scored 10 points off eight first-half Arizona turnovers, and held a 43-29 lead at halftime. The Utes shot 57 percent from the field in the first half. Plouffe had 16 first-half points.
In the second half, Utah led by 17 points, 48-31 with 17:00 left in the game before a 7-0 Arizona run cut the Utah lead to 10 points, 48-38 with 11 minutes remaining. Through the final 11 minutes, the Wildcats would score just three field goals, allowing the Utes to push their lead up to 20 points in the final minutes of the game. Utah held Arizona to 23 percent shooting in the second half.
Utah hit a season-high 12 three's in the game.
Notes: Utah has won seven of its last nine games ... Plouffe scored 20 points for the seventh time this season ... Plouffe moved into the top-10 all-time at Utah in scoring. She has 1,439 career points, ranking 10th all-time ... Rachel Messer hit three three-pointers, moving her into 10th on the all-time Utah list in three's made. She has 129 career threes ... Utah fell to UCLA in the only regular-season contest between the two teams, 70-42 in Los Angeles on Feb. 3.
