SALT LAKE CITY - Taryn Wicijowski and Iwalani Rodrigues each scored 20 points to lead the Utah women's basketball team to a 79-61 victory over Southern Utah on Tuesday evening.

Wicijowski also had a career-high 15 rebounds in the win. She was 10-of-10 from the free throw line. Also scoring in double figures was Rachel Messer with 10 points.

"Overall very pleased with the effort," Utah head coach Anthony Levrets said. "The energy was good. That's a scrappy basketball team. Southern Utah has really improved over the past few years, and I feel really good about our effort and how we played."

Utah shot 46-percent from the floor, including 48-percent in the first half. The Utes went 25-of-36 from the free-throw line. The teams combined for 44 fouls on the night.

"I think the fouls are really typical of how they play," Levrets said. "They are scrappy. They pressured. They played 12 players tonight, and they just come at you in waves, and they don't worry about fouling you or not. They are going to pressure you for the whole game. We handled it pretty well as the game went on. It took us out of our stuff a little early, but we handled it pretty well as the game went on."

The Utes led by as many as 15 points in the first half. With the score tied 12-12 with 12 minutes left in the first half, the Utes went on a 13-0 run to take a 25-12 lead.

Utah led by 15 points, 31-16 with four minutes remaining. The Thunderbirds rallied to end the first half on a 12-4 run to cut the Ute lead to seven at halftime, 35-28. Wicijowski had 14 points to lead Utah at halftime, while Rodrigues had nine rebounds at the break.

Utah took control coming out of halftime with a 16-0 run over the first three and a half minutes to take a 23-point lead, 51-28 to put Utah in control.

"We just guarded," Levrets said of the early halftime run. "As the game goes our players start understanding how they are scoring, and are able to clamp down a little bit more. Our kids do a great job making adjustments to start the second half."

Southern Utah continued to fight, and cut the lead down to nine points, 70-61, with four minutes remaining. However, the Thunderbirds went cold from the floor and would not score the remainder of the game, and Utah pulled back ahead to take the win.

Southern Utah was led by 12 points from Marissa Robbins.

Utah returns to the court on Friday, Nov. 16 against Michigan at 4:30 p.m. MT.
