LAS VEGAS - Senior forward Michelle Plouffe poured in 22 points, grabbed nine rebounds and tied her season high with three steals, but the University of Utah women's basketball team lost to Butler, 66-54, on Friday at the South Point Arena.
Utah (2-3) was led by Plouffe throughout the game as she made her first four shots and ended the game with a .714 percentage from the floor (10-14). With nine rebounds, she has 921 over her career and is 95 away from moving into third place in school history. After the 22-point performance, Plouffe has 1,669 career points and is 22 points away from moving into eighth-place on the school's all-time career list.
Freshman guard Malia Nawahine hit her first two field goal attempts of the game and ended with seven points and two rebounds to go along with a career-high two steals.
Freshman guard Devri Owens started 0-for-2 from the floor, but connected on three of her next four 3-point field goal attempts. The Plano, Texas native totaled nine points on a 3-of-7 shooting night with all attempts were from 3-point territory.
Sophomore guard Danielle Rodriguez handed out a game-high five assists, contributed five points and corralled a season-high six rebounds, while senior forward Ariel Reynolds tied her season-high with three points.
Butler scored the first points of the contest before a 4-0 Ute run gave them an early 4-2 lead. Butler came back with a 4-0 run of its own, but Utah came back with a Nawahine 3-pointer to tie the game for the second time. The Bulldogs then took six of the next eight points to grab a 15-9 lead, but a 4-0 personal run by Plouffe brought the Utes within a pair (15-13). Butler was able to extend its lead back out to nine (24-15) via a 9-2 spurt. Utah was able to pull within six (30-24) and ended the half with a pair of Owens' 3-pointers, but trailed going into halftime for the first time this season, 34-27. The Utes shot 40.0 percent from the field (12-30), led by a 6-of-8 effort from Plouffe for a game-high 12 points in the first half. Nawahine scored seven, while Owens added six. Rodriguez tied her season high with five rebounds in the first half alone.
Butler (2-4) was led by a 21-point, eight-rebound performance by Liz Stratman.
