SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah women's basketball team continued its winning ways with a strong defensive performance in a 58-42 victory over UC Irvine on Thursday evening.

Taryn Wicijowski led Utah with 16 points while Michelle Plouffe scored 15 points. Iwalani Rodrigues had a career-high 15 rebounds with seven points and a season-high two blocks.

"I'm really happy with our defensive performance," Utah head coach Anthony Levrets said. "For stretches of the game we were about as good as we can be defensively. We've really concentrated on rebounding from the guard position and obviously that paid some huge dividends with Iwa getting 15 rebounds. It wasn't just those 15 - Dani [Rodriguez] got seven, Rachel [Messer] had three and Cheyenne [Wilson] had two. Just a really good overall defensive performance."

The Utes (9-1) took a quick 12-2 lead through the first four minutes of the first half. With Utah leading by 10 points, 21-11 with eight minutes left in the first half, an 8-2 Anteater run cut the lead to three points, 23-20 with six minutes remaining in the half. However, it was the final points that UC Irvine would score in the first half. The Utes to closed out the first half on a 9-0 run to take a 32-20 lead into the locker room. Wicijowski had 11 points at halftime while Rodrigues pulled down six rebounds.

UC Irvine (3-8) went almost 15 minutes without a field goal between the first and second halves. Utah held as much as a 21-point lead in the second half.

"I think we did a good job defensively, for the most part," Wicijowski said. "We had a few errors in our discipline that led to some baskets for them, but for the most part we just played our personnel and played our scout, and I think that really helped us. On offense, we played zone for so long in that game, and I think we moved the ball really well and had a good game plan."
