Michelle Plouffe scored 16 points to lead Utah, which trailed Cal by 13 points with 6:10 remaining before pulling within three points in the closing seconds. Taryn Wicijowski's jumper with two seconds left cut the Utes deficit to 53-50, but Cal's Afure Jemerigbe was fouled and sank both free throws to seal the 55-50 win for the Golden Bears.
Iwalani Rodrigues and Wicijowski had 11 points apiece for Utah in the teams' Pac-12 opener. Plouffe also had seven rebounds.
Utah trailed by 12 points at halftime before opening the second half on a 9-2 run, pulling the Utes to within five points with 12:42 remaining in the game.
Utah falls to 9-3 on the season and 0-1 in Pac-12 play.
Fourth-ranked Stanford opened its Pac-12 campaign with a 57-40 victory over No. 20 Colorado on Friday evening. Chiney Ogwumike led the Cardinal with 20 points and 11 rebounds, adding three blocks on defense.
Stanford limited the Buffaloes to just 28.2 percent shooting (15-for-52) as the Buffs made just one of their first 18 field goals in the contest.
Stanford is 12-1 on the year and 1-0 in the Pac-12.

Utah continues to rank second in the Pac-12 in scoring defense, holding opponents to 52.8 points per game.
Michelle Plouffe and Taryn Wicijowski are tied for fourth in the Pac-12 in scoring with 16.3 points per game. Wicijowski ranks ninth in rebounding (7.7) while Plouffe is tied for 10th (7.6).
Rachel Messer had a season-high six rebounds against Cal, including seven points. She made two three's against Cal (2-for-4) to move to second in the conference in three-point field goal percentage (.406).
Taryn Wicijowski had three blocks against Cal, tying her season high.
