A late surge by UCLA led to a heartbreaking loss for the Utah women's basketball team, 65-60 on Thursday evening.
With the Utes leading by nine, 55-46 with 5:30 remaining, the Bruins closed out the game with a 19-5 run to take the win. Utah struggled with UCLA's defensive press in the final minutes, making just one field goal and turning the ball over six times.
Four players scored in double figures for the Utes, led by 14 points from Taryn Wicijowski. Rachel Messer scored a career-high 13 points while Janita Badon and Iwalani Rodrigues each had 10 points. Michelle Plouffe had a team-high 12 rebounds.
The Utes fall to 2-6 in the Pac-12 and 9-10 overall.
Late free throws by Colorado lifted the Buffs to a 69-67 win over USC on Thursday evening.
USC and Colorado traded the lead 14 times and saw the score lock up even 11 times. USC took a 67-65 lead with 45 seconds to go on a jumper only to have Colorado answer for a 67-67 tie with 30 seconds left. On USC's last possession a jump ball went to Colorado with nine seconds left. On the other end, Colorado's Chucky Jeffery was fouled with 1.2 seconds left. She hit both free throws to give Colorado the win.
USC goes to 10-8 overall and 5-3 in Pac-12 play with the loss.

The Utes rank second in the Pac-12 in scoring defense (54.2) and free-throw percentage (.715).
Utah's losses have come by an average of 8.1 points. Eight of Utah's 10 losses have been by single digits.
Rachel Messer (13) and Rachel Morris (5) each had career highs in scoring against UCLA.
Michelle Plouffe, who had a team-high 12 rebounds against UCLA, continues to lead the Utes in both scoring (14.1) and rebounding (8.5). She is ninth in the Pac-12 in scoring and fifth in rebounding. She is third in the Pac-12 in three-point field goal percentage (.397) and defensive rebounds (6.4).
Taryn Wicijowski ranks sixth in the Pac-12 in rebounding (8.3).
Janita Badon continues to lead the conference in assists (5.7). She had nine against UCLA. Badon ranks fourth in the conference in assist/turnover ratio (1.6). Utah will hold their annual Power of Pink game on Saturday against USC. Fans who wear pink will receive free admission. The team will hold a `Pink Walk' before the game, starting at the Huntsman Cancer Institute and walking to the Huntsman Center. Fans who attend will receive pink giveaway items and admission to a pregame reception, in addition to free game admission.
