ATLANTA - Utah women's basketball senior guard Morgan Warburton has been named as a regional finalist for the 2009 NCAA Division I State Farm Coaches' All-America Basketball Team by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). In addition, head coach Elaine Elliott has been named as the Region 7 Coach of the Year.
Warburton is one of 52 players across the country to be selected as a regional finalist. The Mountain West Conference Player of the Year is averaging 18.7 points per game and is second in the nation in free throw percentage (91.1-percent). She has led the Utes in scoring in 17 games and has scored in double figures in 65 consecutive games. At the MWC Tournament, Warburton scored the winning basket with 2.7 seconds left against New Mexico in the semifinals and then led Utah with 24 points, including going 14-of-14 from the free-throw line, against San Diego State in the championship game. She was selected as the Tournament MVP.
The candidates will be cut to 40 finalists on March 25 and 10 players will be named to the All-America team.
Elliott is in her 26th season as a head coach at Utah and her 30th year overall. She is 558-221 (.716) in her career. This season, Elliott led the 22-9 Utes to the MWC regular season title and a conference tournament championship. Utah is making its fourth appearance in the NCAA Tournament in the past five years. This is the fifth time she has won the WBCA's regional coach of the year award.
Elliott is a finalist for the WBCA National Coach of the Year award, which will be announced on April 6.
No. 9 seed Utah will take on No. 8 seed Villanova in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday, March 22.
