Canada Earns Quarterfinal Spot in London Olympics with Win Over Brazil

LONDON - The Canada Senior Women's National Team earned a berth into the quarterfinal round as it defeated Brazil, 79-73, on Friday.

Kim Smith had 14 points with five rebounds for Canada. Shona Thorburn scored 10 points with eight assists. Michelle Plouffe did not play.

Canada held a lead through each of the first three quarters before Brazil tied the game at 55 at the start of the fourth quarter. Although the Brazilians briefly took the lead, Canada rallied down the stretch and made free throws in the final minutes to take the victory.

Canada (2-2) closes out pool play on Sunday against Australia, with the quarterfinals beginning on Tuesday, August 7.
