Aug. 5, 2012

Box Score

LONDON - Former Utah player Kim Smith scored a team-high 17 points as the Canada Senior Women's National Basketball Team's comeback fell short against Australia in a 72-63 loss in the final game of group play at the London Olympics.

Canada, which finished fourth in Group B with a 2-3 record, plays the winner of Group A, the USA, on Tuesday, August 7, at 2:00 p.m. (7:00 a.m. MT). Canada would need to win at least two more games to be in contention for a medal, while a loss on Tuesday would mark the end of the Olympics for the team.

The USA finished 5-0 in group play, and is currently ranked first in the world in the current FIBA rankings.

Shona Thorburn scored nine points against Australia, while Michelle Plouffe saw her first action of the tournament, playing three minutes.

Australia held a significant lead in the first half before Canada rallied in the third quarter to cut the lead to five, 47-42, entering the fourth quarter. Australia made free throws in the final minute to hold on for the win.
