In Her Own Words: Michelle Plouffe's London Experience

Aug. 27, 2012

Utah women's basketball player Michelle Plouffe participated with the Canada Senior Women's National Basketball Team this summer at the London Olympics. Below, she writes about her experience.

Hey Ute Fans!

Plouffey here giving you an update on how my summer went! If you don't know already, I had the opportunity to play on the Canadian National Team and qualified for the London Olympics early this summer! Our road to London wasn't an easy one but we qualified for the first time in 12 years! It was unbelievable to be a part of this huge step in Canada basketball. But that was just the beginning! Three weeks after we qualified, we left for London to be a part of the 2012 Olympic Games. We were in new territory but we knew we were ready to shake things up! We were fortunate to be able to walk in the opening ceremonies which was a dream come true for me. Being recognized as an OLYMPIAN in front of millions of people was absolutely unreal and even saying that now is still pretty surreal.

Then the next morning we jumped right in and started our tournament! We went 2-3 over the next 10 days. Lost a couple close ones but ultimately qualified for the quarterfinals for the first time EVER! Another huge step for Canada basketball. Unfortunately we got matched up to the gold medal winners - USA - in the quarterfinals and did not move on.

This summer was an incredible learning experience for me. I was so grateful to be led by such amazing veterans - our very own Kim Smith and Shona Thorburn especially - and hopefully can bring everything I learned back to Utah this season! Although my role on the team was much different from here at the U, I still had an amazing time and am looking forward to more Olympics in the future!

So, so, so much thanks to all the support I received from you all this summer. It went a long way. However, I am very glad to be back and super excited about the team we have this year. I cannot WAIT for the season to start!!!!!!!!!!
