Utah Women's Basketball Signs Four to NLI's

Nov. 20, 2012

SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah women's basketball team has announced the signing of four student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Wendy Anae (San Diego, Calif.), Malia Nawahine (Springville, Utah), Devri Owens (Plano, Texas) and Emily Potter (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) will join the Utes in 2013-14.

"We feel like this class addresses all of our recruiting needs," Utah head coach Anthony Levrets said. "Each one of our signees has the ability to make an immediate impact on our program. The best thing about this group is that they are all wonderful kids with great families and will be excellent representatives of the University of Utah and the women's basketball program."

Anae was a second-team all-Western League player out of Cathedral Catholic in California. Nawahine was a Utah all-state selection last year after leading Springville High School to the 4A championship game. She averaged 18 points per game. Owens was the District 8 5A Most Valuable Player at Plano West High School in Texas. Potter won a bronze medal with the Canada Cadette Women's National Team at the FIBA U17 Championships over the summer, scoring 17 points with 11 rebounds in the bronze medal game.

Continue below for more on each player:

Wendy Anae
Cathedral Catholic HS/San Diego, Calif.

Levrets on Anae: Wendy is a very athletic in-out post player, who plays with an unbelievable amount of energy. She can shoot the ball from the perimeter, put the ball on the floor and finish around the basket. She will fit perfectly into how we play.

Second-team all-Western League in 2012 ... played AAU ball for Compton/So Cal Magic ... also participated in track and cross country ... all-league in cross country ... grandfather Bill Cravens played football at Utah (1960-62) ... mother Valerie Cravens played four years at BYU (1980-84) ... cousin of fellow Utah signee Malia Nawahine.

Malia Nawahine
Springville HS/Springville, Utah

Levrets on Nawahine: Malia is a very gifted wing. She can shoot the ball, put the ball on the floor, and is a very good passer. What her biggest asset is, to go along with her skill set, is her level of competitiveness. This should allow her to make an immediate impact on our program.

Led Springville HS to the 4A championship game in 2012, scoring 91 points with 27 three-pointers in the state tournament ... all-state ... all-valley Offensive Player of the Year ... first-team all-region ... averaged 18 points, eight rebounds and three steals per game ... grandfather Bill Cravens played football at Utah (1960-62) ... cousin of fellow Utah signee Wendy Anae.

Devri Owens
Plano West HS/Plano, Texas

Levrets on Owens: Devri is a combo guard who has the ability to play both the point and the wing. She is an incredible shooter who can also put the ball on the floor and make plays for others. She comes from one of the best high school programs in the state of Texas, and will be very well prepared to transition to the collegiate level.

District 8 5A Most Valuable Player ... all-area ... helped lead Plano West to the Region 1 quarterfinals last season with a 34-4 record ... averaged 12.5 points and 3.3 assists per game as a junior ... 54 three-pointers ... also runs track ... plays AAU ball with the Texas Fire.

Emily Potter

Levrets on Potter: Emily is a multidimensional post player. She has great size and great hands, which allows her to be effective around the basket, but she also possesses a skill set and ability to pass and handle the basketball, which will allow her to fit in very well with how we play. She was a vital member of the Canadian Cadette team that won a bronze medal at the FIBA U17 tournament.
