SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah women's basketball team hosts Brigham Young in the Deseret First Duel on Saturday, Dec. 8, at 3:00 p.m. MT.
"We are looking forward to the matchup against BYU," Utah head coach Anthony Levrets said. "It still feels weird to have the rivalry game at this time of year, but we are expecting the same kind of game that we always have - two teams competing their tails off."
Utah is one of 19 NCAA teams that remain undefeated this season. Three Pac-12 teams are undefeated - Stanford (8-0), Utah (7-0) and Colorado (6-0). Utah is ninth in the NCAA in field goal percentage (48.2) while ranking eighth in three-point field goal percentage (41.2).
The winner of Saturday's game between BYU and Utah earns three points in the Deseret First Duel rivalry series between Utah and BYU. Utah leads the Duel, 19-3, after five events. Utah has wins in women's soccer, football and men's and women's swimming with BYU garnering points from volleyball. Saturday's men's basketball game is also worth three points.
Utah is coming off a 62-61 win over Hawaii. Taryn Wicijowski was named the Pac-12 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for her performance against Utah State and Hawaii. She averaged 23.5 points per game, shot 69 percent from the floor, and pulled down 6.5 rebounds per game while leading Utah to a pair of wins.
The Utes do not have a midweek game for the first time in three weeks.
"We will have a little bit of rest time, and a couple of really good days of practice," Levrets said. "We will work on ourselves early in the week and then prepare to play BYU. We'll get a couple of really good prep days in."
BYU is 3-4 overall. After opening the year 2-0, the Cougars have dropped four of their last five games. BYU is coming off an overtime loss to Creighton, 65-62. BYU plays Utah State on Tuesday before facing the Utes.
Utah leads the all-time series against BYU, 62-36, but the Cougars have held the upper hand in recent years, winning five of the last six games. Last year BYU survived a late Utah rally to win 63-58 in Provo. Michelle Plouffe scored 21 points to lead the Utes in the game. Utah's last win came in March, 2011, with Plouffe sinking a jumper at the buzzer in the Mountain West Conference Tournament to give the Utes a 50-49 win.
