Scouting Weber State
Weber State is 3-5 on the year and has dropped four of its last five games. Last time out it lost a 76-69 contest to Brigham Young on Dec. 10. Caitlin Anderson leads the Wildcats with 17.6 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. Two others are also averaging in double figures - Tonya Schnibbe (14.1 ppg) and Ali Thorderson (12.5 ppg).
Last Time Out
A solid second half powered the Utah women's basketball team to a victory over Santa Clara, 73-53.
Morgan Warburton led Utah (4-4) with 20 points, 16 of which came in the first half. Kalee Whipple had 17 points with a team-high four steals. Katie King was also in double figures with 12 points, including going 10-for-10 from the free throw line. Halie Sawyer led the Utes with 11 rebounds and also had seven points.
Up 33-26 at halftime, the Utes opened the second half with a 24-9 run over the first 10 minutes to take a 22-point lead, 57-35, and held that through the remainder of the contest.
Utah Schedule Ranked High in RPI
The Collegiate Basketball News Women's RPI College Basketball Ratings, released Dec. 14, has ranked Utah's schedule 33rd in the country. Several of the Ute's opponents this year are either ranked or are receiving votes in one or both polls. The Mountain West Conference is ranked eighth in the RPI.
Utah vs. Ranked Opponents
Utah is 0-2 this season against ranked opponents. Utah fell to No. 7/8 Louisville on Nov. 25, 59-48 and lost to No. 16/15 Virginia, 65-57.
Utah is ranked third in the country in free-throw percentage (.820) ... Morgan Warburton has scored in double figures in an MWC record 42 consecutive games ... Utah is 2-0 when shooting 55% or better from the field ... the Utes have out-rebounded all but one of its opponents this year ... Deanne Stevenson started the first game of the season. She continues to struggle with chronic injuries ... in addition to Stephens and Badon, freshman Mandy Munns has played in all eight games this year.
The Warburton-Whipple Combo
Morgan Warburton and Kalee Whipple are arguably the best wing combo in the Mountain West Conference. Both girls hit the 500 rebound mark last week, Whipple against Westminster and Warburton vs. Santa Clara.
The duo rank second and third, respectively, in the MWC in scoring. Warburton (18.8 ppg) is also fifth in the conference in rebounding (7.5 rpg). Whipple (17.4 ppg) ranks third in the conference in steals (2.5 per game).
Warburton is also in the top 10 in the MWC in assists (8th - 3.63 per game), free throw percentage (6th - .895) and defensive rebounds (2nd - 6.88 per game).
Whipple is sixth in the conference in three-point field goals (6th - 2.13) and defensive rebounds (10th - 4.63 per game).
