SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah women's basketball team opens its Pac-12 Conference campaign on Friday, Jan. 4 against seventh-ranked California before taking on fourth-ranked Stanford on Sunday, Jan. 6.

"We are excited to begin conference play," Utah head coach Anthony Levrets said. "It's going to be incredibly challenging, but that's the fun part of competing in this conference. You get the opportunity to play against the very best. We're looking forward to seeing how we fit into this league and competing every single night."

Utah closed out its non-conference season with a 9-2 record.

The Utes play their first game on the Pac-12 Network on Friday against Cal with tip at 6:00 p.m. MT.

California is 10-1 on the season and ranked seventh in the latest Associated Press poll. The Golden Bears only loss was to then-fourth-ranked Duke. Five players are averaging in double-figure scoring, led by Gennifer Brandon's 13.8 points and 10.6 rebounds per game.

Cal holds a 7-4 lead in the all-time series. The Utes made a valiant comeback in a 63-56 loss at home last season before falling 60-46 in Berkeley later in the year. Utah's last win in the series came in 1988.

Stanford (11-1) dropped to No. 4 in the polls after suffering its first loss of the season to Connecticut this past week. The Cardinal had spent the previous six weeks at No. 1 after defeating 2012 NCAA champion Baylor in the second week of the season.

Stanford is led by Chiney Ogwumike, who is averaging 21.5 points and 12.8 rebounds per game.

The Utes are 0-14 against Stanford in the series. The closest the Utes have come to defeating the Cardinal was in 2007, when a Leilani Mitchell-led Utah team took Stanford to double overtime in an 81-77 loss.
