Delaney, Dabritz Close out NCAA Championships

April 22, 2012

DULUTH, Ga.--

Georgia Dabritz and Kailah Delaney finally had their freshman moment. The first-team All-Americans, competing in their first NCAA Championships, came up big during the two days of team competition, but both were subpar in event finals.

Delaney finished ninth and Dabritz 10th on vault as Utah's only individual event finalists.

Delaney vaulted from the fourth position and finished with a two-vault average of 9.70. Like many of the finalists, Delaney did not have a 10.0 valued second vault. She received a 9.825 for her first vault--the same one that scored a 9.95 to earn her first place in her qualifying session, Friday--but today a hop on her landing cost her. Her second vault, a layout with only a 9.8 start value, lowered her average score to a 9.7.

Dabritz was one of the only vaulters in the field with two 10.0 valued vaults, but she bailed in mid air on her second vault, switching from her planned one-and-a-half to a full. Since she also did a full on her first vault, she was docked a point for doing the same vault twice. She finished with an 8.7938.

"I was going to do my one and a half on my second vault, but I was high on the table and I knew I wouldn't land on my feet, so I played it safe rather than risk getting hurt," said Dabritz, who said the event was a "great experience" anyway.

"I don't have a second vault and didn't have time to practice one this year, so I just did a layout for my second vault," said Delaney. "It was great just to be here though."

Dabritz and Delaney were two of five Utes who combined to win eight All-America honors at the 2012 NCAA Championships. They were joined on the first team by Stephanie McAllister and Corrie Lothrop, both in the all-around. Second team honors went to Lothrop on bars and floor, McAllister on vault and freshman Tory Wilson on vault.

McAllister graduates as a five-time All-American and sophomore Lothrop also has five All-America awards. Dabritz, Delaney and Wilson are all one-time All-Americans as freshman.
