THIS WEEK IN UTAH GYMNASTICS
Ahead for the No. 7 ranked Utah gymnasts is the Pac-12 Gymnastics Championships on Saturday, Mar. 23 in Corvallis, Ore. There will be two sessions with four teams in each, starting with seeds 5-8 at 1:30 p.m. PST in Gill Coliseum. At 7 p.m. PST (8 p.m. MST), seeds 1-4 will take the floor. Utah, as the top seed, will compete against second-seeded UCLA, third-seeded OSU and fourth-seeded Stanford. Both sessions will be televised live nationally on the Pac-12 Networks with Jim Watson and Amanda Borden commentating. Live scoring will be available at www.osubeavers.com. Utah's 198.125 in a victory over Florida (197.875) last week is the third-highest score in the nation behind the No. 1 ranked Gators (198.425) and second-ranked Oklahoma (198.375) ... Utah gymnastics led all women's sports in attendance this season, averaging 14,349 to its home meets to beat Alabama gymnastics (13,422) and Tennessee women's basketball (11,993). It is Utah's third all-sports women's attendance title (the Utes also won in 2010 and 2011) and its 29th gymnastics attendance championship ... Utah finished the regular season with a 10-2-1 overall record and was 4-1-1 in Pac-12 play. Pac-12 wins were against Arizona, Arizona State, California and Stanford. The Utes also beat OSU, but it was not a league meet. Utah's sole conference loss was to UCLA and the tie was against Washington.
MEET IN A MINUTE
The 2013 Pac-12 Championships will feature four teams ranked in the top 15 in the nation: No. 7 Utah, No. 8 UCLA, No. 10 Oregon State and No. 11 Stanford ... The sessions are identical to last year, with Arizona, ASU, Cal and Washington competing in the afternoon and Utah, UCLA, OSU and Stanford squaring off at night ... Seeds are based on the Mar. 18 regional qualifying scores ... The high scoring team wins the meet, regardless of session ... Utah's rotation order will be floor, vault, bars, beam. The rotation order was determined at the annual coaches meeting last May by a blind draw. The Nos. 4 and 8 seeds will start on vault, Nos. 2 and 6 on bars, Nos. 3 and 7 on beam and Nos. 1 and 5 on floor. For complete rotation orders, see the bottom of page 1 ... At the 2012 Pac-12 Championships in Salt Lake City, UCLA edged Utah by five-hundredths of a point for first place. Utah was followed by Oregon State and Stanford ... 2012 Pac-12 all-round champion Corrie Lothrop
of Utah will be unable to defend her title due to a season-ending injury. Lothrop, a five-time All-America junior, tore her Achilles while warming up on floor against ASU in the fourth meet of the season ... Utah is also missing Kailah Delaney
, a first-team All-America and all-Pac-12 vaulter last season as a freshman, who has missed the entire 2013 season due to knee surgery ... Sophomore Georgia Dabritz
will attempt to repeat as the Pac-12 uneven bar champion. In addition to her bar title, Dabritz was the 2012 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year.
A record 19,374 fans turned out for last year's Pac-12 Gymnastics Championships (8,495 for the afternoon session and 10,879 at night), shattering the old conference mark of 3,035 set at Stanford in 2009 ... Utah is 293-51-4 (85%) all-time against Pac-12 teams. Utah's series record against each team follows: Arizona (52-0-0), Arizona State (64-16-1), California (10-0-0), Oregon State (60-8-0), Stanford (20-5-0), UCLA (43-22-1) and Washington (44-0-2) ... Three Pac-12 teams advanced all the way to the NCAA Super Six a year ago, with UCLA finishing third, Stanford fourth and Utah fifth. Oregon State also qualified into the 2012 NCAA Championships ... Pac-12 teams have won 15 NCAA Championships (Utah 9, UCLA 6) and 78 individual championships. Pac-12 teams have earned 901 All-America honors and Utah leads the nation with 324 All-Americans ... Utah is the only program to qualify for all 31 NCAA Championships and for the last 37 national championships. The Utes are tied with Alabama for most Super Six appearances (18) and are the only team to qualify for every Super Six from 2000-12.
After seven weeks at No. 1, sophomore All-American Tory Wilson
has dropped into a tie for second place (with UCLA's Vanessa Zamarripa) on vault in the national rankings, despite becoming the first gymnast in Utah history to go undefeated on an event in the regular season (10-0). In last week's upset win over Florida, Wilson tied for first place with UF's Kytra Hunter--both scoring a 9.975--but Hunter leapfrogged past her in the rankings. Hunter has a 9.965 regional qualifying score, with Wilson and Zamarripa close behind at 9.960.
