Taylor Allex, the 2012 Junior Olympic vault champion and a third-place all-around finisher, has signed a National Letter of Intent with the University of Utah gymnastics team, head coaches Greg and Megan Marsden announced today. Allex will join the team in the fall after graduating from Becker High School (Becker, Minn.) a year early.

"We feel very fortunate to add a gymnast of Taylor's caliber to our team for the upcoming season," said Greg Marsden. "She has come on incredibly strong in the past couple of years and we feel as though the best is still yet to come with Taylor. She will bring a powerful style of gymnastics that will complement the gymnasts we already have in the program."

Allex will compete for the only school to qualify for 37-consecutive national championships and all 31 NCAA Championships. The Utes have won 10 national championships and have placed in the top-three 22 times. Utah leads the country in NCAA Super Six appearances with 18 and is the only school in the country to make the Super Six every year since 2000.

The Utes own every gymnastics attendance record and averaged an NCAA record 14,352 fans a home meet last season. The Utes have averaged over 11,000 fans to their home meets since 1992.

Allex, who did not begin participating in gymnastics until age 10, has made a meteoric rise in a sport that others take up as young as two or three years old.

Named to the Junior Olympic National Team for placing third at the 2012 Championships, she preceded that with a fifth-place all-around finish at the 2011 J.O. Championships. She also has fared well in her last two regional competitions, winning floor and placing second on beam in the 2011 regional championships and winning the all-around, vault, bars and floor at the 2012 regionals.

Other victories include the all-around, vault and bars titles at the 2011 Courtney Kupets Invitational.

The daughter of Jerry and Dominique trains at Classic Gymnastics for coaches Bryon Hough and Pat Nelson. Her mother was a gymnast for Washington State.

Allex becomes the third gymnast--and the second Minnesota native--to sign a National Letter of Intent with the Utes for the 2013 season. In November, Breanna Hughes (Champlin, Minn.) and Haley Lange (Bellevue, Wash.) accepted scholarship offers to the U. in November. Hughes finished third in the Senior D division at the 2012 J.O. Championships. Lange was injured and did not participate in the meet.
